HOA Resources

Owner’s Association Sustainability Workshops

Big Sky SNO hosts neighborhood workshops designed to help HOA/POA staff and boards, property managers, realtors, homeowners, and developers better understand sustainability and resilience topics that impact Big Sky properties and communities.

2026 Workshop: Fire Resilience & Wildfire Preparedness

This year’s workshop focused on wildfire resilience and how neighborhoods, property owners, and community partners can better prepare for wildfire risk.

The session covered practical steps for creating more fire-resilient homes, landscapes, and neighborhoods, including home hardening, defensible space, communication planning, and available local resources.

Landscaping & Wildfire Resilience

Alpenscapes is Big Sky’s go-to resource for landscapes that are fire-safe, water-wise, and ecosystem-friendly.

Because landscaping directly affects wildfire risk, water use, maintenance costs, and ecosystem health, it is one of the most impactful areas where HOAs can take action.

Energy & Buildings

Build Better Big Sky is Big Sky SNO’s resource for building energy information, incentives, and local professionals who support efficient, resilient building practices.

Big Sky Home Energy Audits

Through Build Better Big Sky, SNO offers free and subsidized Energy audits to help identify where buildings are losing energy and highlight practical opportunities to improve comfort, efficiency, and long-term performance.

Energy audits for condo associations can be free when organized and shared across multiple units. HOAs can coordinate audits as a group project or help promote them within their community so more homeowners can participate.

HOAs can help reduce building energy use by:

  • Sharing resources like Build Better Big Sky

  • Evaluating covenants to ensure they do not unintentionally prohibit energy efficiency or renewable energy improvements. Ensure rules allow for upgrades such as rooftop solar, outdoor heat pump units, and other energy-saving improvements

  • Promote the Big Sky Energy Audit program

Financing & Incentives

Plan ahead for resilient community investments

Long-term financial planning can help HOAs prepare for projects that improve efficiency, resilience, and long-term property value.

Sustainability Fund

HOAs can create a sustainability fund to help ensure resources are available for larger improvement projects. Similar to a reserve fund, this allows communities to earmark money specifically for projects such as water-wise landscaping, building efficiency upgrades, HVAC electrification in condo associations, etc. Sustainability funding can be incorporated into the annual budget process alongside reserve contributions.
